Kernkonzept joins SOAFEE

Kernkonzept joins the automotive community of interest SOAFEE to co-develop a scalable, open embedded architecture for automotive as an open-source software developer.

Dresden, January 12, 2023 – Kernkonzept joins the automotive community of interest SOAFEE to co-develop a scalable, open embedded architecture for automotive as an open-source software developer.

The Dresden-based software development company Kernkonzept is a new member of the Special Interest Group of SOAFEE: the project to develop a Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge. Car manufacturers, semiconductor vendors, cloud technology companies, and open-source software development companies are working together in this community of interest.

The SOAFEE architecture seeks to re-use existing open standards for the components in its deployment framework for automotive workloads. Those standards will then be extended to meet the mixed-criticality requirements of automotive applications. The initial SOAFEE R1 that can be used to start enabling automotive DevOps using cloud-native fundamentals is available for download on Github.

SOAFEE was founded in 2021 by the respected British semiconductor manufacturer Arm. Its governing body consists of other renowned software companies like RedHat, Bosch, or Continental. Until today, SOAFEE has been joined by more than 75 members.

Kernkonzept will provide its expertise in design and development of operating systems and system architectures to the group. Our field-proven L4Re Hypervisor and the L4Re Operating System Framework provide a wide range of applications, from small micro-controllers to large servers. Our open-source technology is already being used in the automotive field.

“Being a member in the SOAFEE network is an honor for Kernkonzept and a stepping stone to new application areas. Our L4Re Operating System Framework is excellently suited for real-time applications and virtualization in the automotive sector and is already being used here,” explains Dr.-Ing. Adam Lackorzynski, CTO of Kernkonzept.

A unified, scalable, cloud-native software architecture for mixed-critical automotive applications with a corresponding open-source reference implementation is the declared goal of SOAFEE. As a member of the SOAFEE Special Interest Group (SIG), Kernkonzept will work hard in the future to establish a cloud-native development paradigm for efficient edge workloads.

Kernkonzept is a specialist in secure and safe virtualization and operating-system technology, with customers who develop complex software products for safety-, security-, and mission-critical applications that often require certification or accreditation.

Built on the open-source L4Re technology – a scalable, microkernel-based operating system and hypervisor platform – Kernkonzept delivers system solutions with a minimal attack surface, real-time capabilities, and robust virtualization support, up to L4Re Secure Separation Kernel VS that is accredited up to GEHEIM/NATO SECRET, as well as L4Re Secure Separation Kernel CC, recertified in 2026 with CC EAL 4+.

By leveraging the certified and field-proven L4Re technology, customers significantly reduce the time, cost, and risk involved in certifying their own products. Kernkonzept is tailoring these solutions to meet the demands of safety-critical markets like automotive, as well as high-assurance security, cloud servers, and embedded systems; supporting customers with comprehensive, customized architectural consulting and engineering services. Kernkonzept GmbH is based in Dresden, Germany.
