About the workshop
Secure and sovereign operating systems are an essential feature of modern IT products, as the need for digital security rises. An excellent foundation for IT security is provided by microkernel systems – such as L4Re.
Our workshop “L4Re Remote Access: design and deploy secure system architectures for your product with L4Re” introduces you to the L4Re technology and provides hands-on experience with this IT security technology.
In our online workshop, we give you a condensed overview paired with practical exercises for a focused understanding of the L4Re technology. You learn in a small study group, guided by our skilled L4Re experts.
Individuals and organizations worldwide can use this online workshop regardless of their location to learn about the microkernel system design principles behind L4Re, gain practical experience, and connect with the specialists who maintain the open-source L4Re Operating System Framework.
The L4Re Remote Access Workshop introduces you to the design principles of the L4Re technology. As a starting point for your independent continued learning in the L4Re system, it combines both theoretical sessions and practical exercises, allowing you to apply your newly acquired knowledge immediately.

After the last session, you will be confident in configuring L4Re, be able to set up and run complex scenarios, and use the L4Re Operating System Framework as a hypervisor to securely encapsulate existing operating systems.
Most importantly, you will be able to write your first L4Re application for your own product.
To accommodate participants from different countries and different time zones, this workshop is entirely online. You can join the live sessions from wherever you are – there is no travel required.
We offer flexible scheduling and, wherever possible, adjust session start times to accommodate participants across different time zones.
The training sessions consist of two consecutive modules with 2 half-day sessions each (4 half-day slots in total, each approximately 4 hours).
Log in from wherever you are.
All you need is your laptop or desktop computer with a Linux or Windows environment and an internet connection. We provide a fully prepared development environment that you can access via VPN. All exercises are carried out using QEMU, so no local installation or configuration is required.
There is no software to install or configure – you can focus entirely on learning, experimenting, and exploring L4Re.
The L4Re Remote Access Workshop is designed for beginners, but a basic understanding of operating system concepts will help you get the most out of the workshop. You do not need professional experience, but you should be familiar with basic software development concepts.
Are you familiar with operating system concepts?
It is useful if you already understand basic operating system concepts (processes, threads, memory management, file systems, system calls, and kernel modules), as they are equally important when working with microkernels.
Are you comfortable using the command line?
Are you familiar with Linux? Do you know how to work with tools such as make, gcc, or gdb? Because L4Re uses many similar development tools and workflows, anyone with basic Linux command-line experience should feel at home.
Have you worked with Git and other open-source projects?
L4Re is open-source software. It follows similar workflows and processes as other open-source projects. If you regularly use version control tools like Git and/or have experience with open-source software projects in general, this will help you understand and use L4Re.
